In 2005, the City of Indianola Parks and Recreation Department commissioned the Amphitheater Replacement Master Plan to replace the existing, aged wooden outdoor amphitheater at Memorial Park. The Master Plan was developed based on feedback from various user groups, stakeholders, public input surveys, and Parks and Recreation staff, reflecting their collective needs and desires.
The Phase 1 Improvements Plan marked the initial implementation of the Master Plan’s objectives. We designed a concrete stage area with colored concrete and specific surface finishes to accommodate performing arts and other events. Behind the stage, we created an enclosed, colored masonry backstage area for storing equipment, props, and staging performers during events.
Additionally, Phase 1 included the installation of the first of six concrete seat walls for spectators. We also added steps for accessing the amphitheater area and ADA-compliant ramps to ensure stage access and accessible seating. We provided vehicular access to the stage and included utility accommodations for future services, such as electrical components, audio equipment, and irrigation. Furthermore, we conducted mass grading of the site to prepare for future additions, including more seat walls, rain gardens, a bus parking area, additional pedestrian access, and future plantings.
