Woodland Hills Park is located in a rapidly expanding neighborhood in West Des Moines, Iowa. The park project was awarded a grant from the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship Water Quality Initiative Targeted Demonstration Watershed Project, specifically aimed at implementing practices within the park to enhance water quality.
The project encompasses enhancements to Woodland Hills Park with the dual objectives of augmenting water quality within the Sugar Creek watershed and serving as a model for best management practices. Integral to this endeavor are the integration of three bioretention cells, two permeable interlocking concrete paver areas, and a four-acre soil quality restoration initiative, tailored to meet treatment goals outlined in the Iowa Storm Water Management Manual. These components were orchestrated in a sequential treatment train format to minimize runoff and maximize opportunities for infiltration, thereby optimizing the park’s environmental impact.
The project aims to achieve several objectives, including increased infiltration, enhanced soil quality, reduced runoff, elevated aesthetic appeal, improved wildlife habitats, decreased moving frequency, minimized use of fertilizers and herbicides, and the provision of educational opportunities for property owners within the watershed.
